If I ran the Cleveland Browns draft (first two rounds – Browns don’t have a third-round pick)
Round 1 (1st overall): Saquon Barkley, RB Penn State
My mock draft I released last week was how I think the draft WILL PLAY OUT. This is different, because I am telling you how I would do it if I were the Browns.
Barkley could be a special playmaker and the Browns can’t get enough of those. I’ll grab Barkley and then see if there is a QB there at #4 I like – or I’ll take…
Round 1 (4th overall): Bradley Chubb, DE North Carolina State
I imagine Chubb and Myles Garrett as bookends on the defensive line and all the damage they can do.
I doubt the Browns’ top-rated QB is still on the board here and they may be able to entice the Broncos to move up.
Otherwise, I’m grabbing Chubb here and then getting my QB later.
Round 2 (33rd overall): Mason Rudolph, QB Oklahoma State
Okay, this might be a reach because Rudolph is soaring up the draft boards.
However, it’s not THAT far-fetched that the 6-foot-4 signal-caller is still out there when the second round begins. He is the ultimate “sit for at least a year guy.”
It forces the Browns and Tyrod Taylor to live with each other for the entire 2018 season.
If the Browns took a QB at 1 or 4, there would be pressure to throw the rookie in at the first sign of Taylor struggling. By waiting for Rudolph, the Browns and Hue Jackson can exercise true patience.
Round 2 (35th overall): Connor Williams, OT Texas
The Browns need to continue to stockpile offensive line talent.
Williams was a left tackle at Texas and could end up starting on the line from day one.
He’s a shade over 6-5, and a shade under 300 pounds.
Round 2 (64th overall): Rasheem Green, DL USC
Add another beast to the already formidable defensive line in Cleveland.
Green is 6-foot-4, 275 pounds and recorded 16 sacks over the last two seasons.
