Urban Meyer’s first Coach’s Show of the 2013 season featured the usually straightforward Buckeye head man addressing fall camp, and preparations for Buffalo. Here are some of the highlights:

  • “The running back position right now? You better practice really hard or you’re not going to play, because there’s plenty of depth…If you’re ever blessed enough to have nine units like that, that’s when magic happens.”
  • On the difference between this year’s fall camp and last year’s: “We didn’t have to practice, practice this year. We went much quicker. Everyone knew where to go, how to go and the expectation level of a practice.”
  • On Braxton Miller: “Fundamentally he’s night and day compared to where he was a year ago. Night and day compared to where he was in April. He’s really good. I’m probably more anxious than the Buckeye fans to see this guy play, because I’m starting to see the ceiling, if that makes sense. I can see how good he can be.”
  • “Jeff Heuerman has earned his way into being one of the top two receivers on the team. Him and Philly Brown are probably the most reliable right now, according to our quaterback. We will always have one tight end on the field at Ohio State this year, and at times we’ll have two.”
  • “We have two scholarship long snappers.”
  • On his assistant coaches: “A place like Ohio State, you shouldn’t leave Ohio State unless you become a head coach. Probably every one of them have that dream, and I’d like to think that our program helps them.”
  • “We were poor last year on defense to start the season, not tackling well fundamentally, not great shape leveraging the ball…By the last half of the season, we were top ten again in our style of defense.”
  • On whether Ohio State could compete with teams from the SEC: “We’re playing Buffalo…I don’t really study the SEC anymore. I like our team, but we still have so much work to do. Am I running from that question? Yeah, there’s no reason to answer that. I don’t know. To be honest, I don’t know.”
  • “The guy that missed about 9 or 10 practices was Curtis Grant, and he’s one guy who can’t miss 9 or 10 practices. But his last week has been very good, so he’ll get the start at [Mike linebacker].”
  • “I’ll be disappointed if Buffalo can come in here and just start pounding the ball at us.”
  • On how much they’ll play a nickel defense: “Last year, I think, it was 60-70% nickel. We’re expecting that or more this year. Tyvis Powell will start at nickel, backed up by Vonn Bell.”
  • On freshman Dontre Wilson: “The right way issue is real. We’ve got to make sure he goes the right way…He’s pretty good. He’s a smart guy, and he’s electric. I don’t want to put too much pressure on him…but I’m hoping he gets real electric on Saturday.”
  • On the new targeting rule: “That will change the game. That will win and lose a game… We went through the videotape with the official probably two weeks ago, and there were about three or four times we would have lost a player last year.”
