Akron 68, Bowling Green 55: Zeke Marshall scored 15 points last night, and visiting Akron extended its winning streak to 12 games.
The Zips (16-4, 7-0), off to their best Mid-American Conference start ever, remained one of two undefeated MAC teams. They will play host to the other, Ohio University, on Saturday.
Akron broke a 9-9 tie with a 14-5 run capped by two dunks by Marshall. The Zips limited the Falcons (7-13, 2-5) to 19 percent first-half shooting (5 of 27) and led 28-17 at halftime.
Bowling Green never got closer than seven points in the second half and trailed by as many as 20.
Chauncey Orr had 16 points for Bowling Green, and A’uston Calhoun had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Xavier 66, Dayton 61: Dee Davis scored 14 points and hit two key free throws late, and Xavier (12-8, 5-2) held court against Atlantic 10 rival Dayton (12-8, 2-4), beating the Flyers for the 28th straight time at home dating to 1981.
The teams exchanged the lead four times in a two-minute span late, ending with Xavier ahead 62-61 on a jumper by Semaj Christon with 59.4 seconds left. Three times, the Flyers sent the Musketeers to the foul line for 1-and-1s. Xavier missed the front end on the first two trips, but both times grabbed the rebound and drew fouls. Davis connected on both 1-and-1 free throws after the third foul, and Matt Derenbecker missed a three-point try for Dayton.
Vee Sanford scored 16 points to lead the Flyers.
Toledo 85, Ball State 78: Rian Pearson scored 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting, leading Toledo (9-10, 4-3 MAC) past host Ball State (7-11, 2-5).
Northern Illinois 67, Kent State 65: Abdel Nader’s go-ahead jumper with five seconds left gave Northern Illinois (5-14, 3-4) the win over visiting Kent State (11-10, 2-5). Nader had 26 points. Darren Goodson led Kent State with 18.
Western Michigan 72, Miami University 68: Shayne Whittington scored 13 points and Western Michigan (13-7, 5-3 MAC) won its fifth consecutive game despite committing 23 turnovers. Will Fielder scored 17 points for host Miami (7-12, 2-5), which lost its fourth straight.
Youngstown State 80, Valparaiso 68: Kendrick Perry had 28 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season to lead host Youngstown State (16-6, 6-2 Horizon League). Valparaiso is 13-8, 5-3.
Detroit 83, Wright State 76: Ray McCallum had 26 points to lead Detroit (14-6, 6-3 Horizon League). Jerran Young had 14 points for host Wright State (14-8, 5-4).
Capital 82, Wilmington 64: Michael Sommer scored 31 points to pace Capital (14-6, 11-2 Ohio Athletic Conference), which pulled away with a 17-4 run in the second half. Malcolm Heard II had 22 points for host Wilmington (10-10, 7-5).
Ohio Northern 82, Otterbein 73: Lucas Pennington scored 21 points to lead Ohio Northern (9-11, 5-8 OAC). Max Van Meter scored 22 for host Otterbein (7-13, 4-9), which hit four straight three-pointers in taking an early 18-8 lead.
Ohio Wesleyan 63, Wittenberg 51: Marshall Morris had 15 points and Dre White 11 to lead host Ohio Wesleyan (14-4, 7-3 North Coast Athletic Conference). Wittenberg is 13-6, 6-4.
Ohio game postponed
Ohio postponed its home game against Eastern Michigan after the campus shut down as a precaution amid a search for an armed robbery suspect. It will be played at 7 p.m. Feb. 20.
Ohio is 15-5 and 6-0 in the MAC. Eastern Michigan is 10-10 and 3-3.
