Around college basketball: Virginia upsets Duke behind 36 by Harris
Virginia 73, No. 3 Duke 68: Joe Harris scored a career-high 36 points and Virginia won its 16th consecutive home game, upsetting Duke in an Atlantic Conference game last night. Akil Mitchell added 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Cavaliers (20-8, 10-5), as he and Harris outplayed Duke’s top twosome of Seth Curry and Mason Plumlee. The victory came 11 years to the day that Virginia knocked off another third-ranked Duke team.
Curry led the Blue Devils (24-4, 11-4) with 28 points, and Quinn Cook had 22. Plumlee finished with 10 points.
No. 25 Louisiana Tech 84, Utah State 61: Brandon Gibson scored 20 points, Raheem Appleby had 15 and Louisiana Tech (25-3, 15-0 Western Athletic Conference) cruised to a home win in its first game as a nationally ranked team since 1985. Utah State fell to 19-8, 9-6.
Apology from Iowa State
Kansas coach Bill Self said the Iowa State student government sent him a letter apologizing for a pair of incidents that occurred after the Jayhawks rallied to an overtime victory over the host Cyclones on Monday night.
After Self gave a brief postgame TV interview, an Iowa State fan had to be held back by security when he charged toward Self.
And on Twitter, at least two fans made racist and threatening comments directed toward the Jayhawks’ Elijah Johnson, who scored 39 points.
Minnesota practice facility
A basketball-practice facility is a top priority among Minnesota’s goals for sports, athletic director Norwood Teague said. He called the practice facility “not a want” but “a need” and said a master building plan will be unveiled in mid-April, estimating a cost between $80 million and $125 million. Private fundraising will be the primary source of money.
New postseason uniforms
Six teams will wear special uniforms in the postseason next month that feature camouflage-patterned shorts, bright-colored jerseys and sleeves. Adidas will outfit three teams with sleeves — Baylor, Louisville and UCLA — and three without: Cincinnati, Kansas and Notre Dame.
