Around college basketball: Spartans roll, still in Big Ten title hunt
No. 10 Michigan State 58, No. 22 Wisconsin 43: Keith Appling scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half to help host Michigan State pull away from Wisconsin last night and stay in the Big Ten race.
The Spartans (23-7, 12-5) moved into a three-way tie for second place with Ohio State and Michigan. They trail conference-leading Indiana with one game left in the regular season.
The Hoosiers can claim the Big Ten title outright with a win on Sunday in Ann Arbor against the Wolverines. If Indiana loses, Michigan would earn a piece of the title and give the Spartans and Buckeyes a shot to pull into a four-way tie. Michigan State closes the season on Sunday at home against Northwestern, after Ohio State plays host to Illinois.
The Badgers fell to fifth place with the decisive loss, one game after Purdue handed them their most lopsided setback at home in more than seven years.
Michigan State broke open a close slugfest with a 16-0 run early in the second half, taking a 21-point lead on Appling’s three-point play.
Penn State 66, Northwestern 59: Jermaine Marshall and D.J. Newbill each scored 18 points to lead Penn State (10-19, 2-15) over host Northwestern (13-17, 4-13).
BIG TEN WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT
Wisconsin 58, Illinois 57: Morgan Paige scored 18 points, including two free throws with three seconds remaining, and 11th-seeded Wisconsin (12-18) upset sixth-seeded Illinois 12-18) in the first round of the Big Ten tournament in Hoffman Estates, Ill.
Iowa 60, Northwestern 55: Morgan Johnson and Jamie Printy scored 18 points apiece, and seventh-seeded Iowa (20-11) knocked off No. 10 seed Northwestern (13-17).
Michigan 67, Indiana 40: Nicole Elmblad scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, and fifth-seeded Michigan (21-9) steamrolled No. 12 seed Indiana (11-19).
