Ohio State roundup: Kobelt, Rola advance at NCAA tennis tournament

Seventh-seeded Peter Kobelt of Ohio State defeated Fred Saba of Duke, 6-3, 6-2 during the first round of the NCAA singles and doubles championships in Urbana, Ill. The Buckeyes’ Blaz Rola defeated Ben McLachlan of California 6-2, 7-6 (4).

Kobelt, a New Albany native, and Connor Smith will take part in doubles action, which begins today. They will face second-seeded Henrique Cunha and Raphael Hemmeler of Duke.

• Ohio State rowing coach Andy Teitelbaum was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. Junior Claire-Louis Bode was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year, and Catherine Shields was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Year.

Teitelbaum led the Buckeyes to their fourth Big Ten title and has been named the coach of the year four times. Ohio State’s varsity crews had a 28-8 record this year, including 8-0 by the second varsity eight, of which Shields was a member.
