College sports: Ohio State athletes lead Big Ten scholars list

Ohio State placed a conference-best 74 athletes on the Big Ten distinguished scholars list. They were among 637 Big Ten athletes in 38 sports who were recognized for maintaining a minimum grade-point average of 3.7.

Nine Buckeyes posted a perfect 4.0 GPA for the year: Derek Blevins (track and field), Aaron Craft (basketball), Adam Homan (football), Randy Languis (wrestling), Michael Newberger (gymnastics), Melissa Rennie (softball), Max Stearns (fencing), Gavin Trebilcock (swimming and diving) and Tim Wetzel (baseball).

• Anna Davis of Grandview and Seth Stahl of Granville won $2,000 scholarships, and five other high-school seniors from the Central District were awarded $1,000 each as part of the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s annual scholarship program.

Davis is a track athlete and soccer player headed to Miami University, and Stahl is a swimmer and soccer player headed to Pittsburgh. Each had a cumulative grade-point average above 4.0 and scored better than 2,000 on the SAT.

The other winners from central Ohio were Kristen Eisenhauer of Pickerington North, Gennar Feucht of West Jefferson, Lauren Thai of Hilliard Bradley, Kaitlyn Willette of Dublin Jerome and Mark David Wright of Tree of Life. Statewide, 54 students were awarded $66,000 in scholarships.

• Dick Slager, Ohio State’s starting quarterback in 1947 and a two-time letterman for OSU’s varsity tennis team, died on Sunday at age 85.

Slager was a West High School product. He was a retired orthopedic surgeon.
