New Ohio State women’s basketball coach Kevin McGuff unveiled a nonconference schedule yesterday that included bruising road games against West Virginia, Georgia, defending national champion Connecticut and Maryland.
All 16 games were in place when McGuff took over from Jim Foster on April 16.
“It’s like everything else when you get a job,” McGuff said. “It’s an ambitious and aggressive schedule, and it fits into what we want to do in rebuilding some of the things in this program. We’re going to find out a lot about ourselves.”
The Buckeyes open the season at West Virginia on Nov. 8. The Mountaineers are one of seven teams on the schedule that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season. The home opener in Value City Arena against Florida Atlantic follows on Nov. 10. The trip to Georgia is on Nov. 17. The Bulldogs reached the Elite Eight last season.
The Buckeyes play Connecticut on Dec. 1 in Springfield, Mass., as part of the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge. This is a nonexempt tournament that begins with games in Value City Arena against Monmouth, Marist and Bowling Green.
“I really like that,” McGuff said. “In the first year, I want to play as many games as I can with our kids. Those three teams are good, and they’ll help get us ready for the Big Ten.”
A Dec. 5 game at Maryland, a Sweet 16 tournament team last season, is part of the Big Ten/ACC challenge.
