Women's basketball: McGuff’s first Ohio State class highly ranked

Ohio State women’s basketball coach Kevin McGuff made some news yesterday with his first recruiting class with the Buckeyes.

The five future Buckeyes, headed by Cincinnati Princeton point guard Kelsey Mitchell, make up the No. 2 class in the nation, according to Blue Star Basketball and Prospects/Nation.com. The ESPN HoopGurlz site has the Buckeyes at No. 7 overall. The class is as follows:

• Asia Doss, 5-foot-7 guard, Detroit Country Day: ranked No. 92 overall by HoopGurlz and No. 49 by Blue Star. … Class B first-team all-state selection as a junior … averaged 18.0 points, 14.5 assists and three steals last season.

• Alexa Hart, 6-3 forward, Africentric: ranked No. 82 overall by HoopGurlz and

No. 38 by Blue Star. … did not compete in junior season due to transfer from North Ridgeville Lake Ridge.

• Chelsea Mitchell, 5-11 forward, Cincinnati Princeton: named to Division I All-District second-team after junior season … averaged 9.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists as a junior.

• Kelsey Mitchell, 5-8 guard, Cincinnati Princeton: ranked No. 3 overall by HoopGurlz and No. 4 by Blue Star. … consensus No. 1 point guard in class. … averaged 23.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals as a junior.

• Makayla Waterman, 6-2 forward, Kettering Fairmont: ranked 69th overall by HoopGurlz and No. 26 by Blue Star. … 2013 Division I state champion.
