Ohio State women's basketball: Kynard leaving for Xavier

High Contrast Normal Version

Ohio State guard Maleeka Kynard will transfer to Xavier, it was announced yesterday.

Kynard is scheduled to graduate from Ohio State in August. As a graduate student transfer, she will be able to play immediately for the Musketeers. She has one year of eligibility remaining.

“I’d like to thank Maleeka for her contributions to the program the past three years,” Buckeyes coach Kevin McGuff said in a news release. “We understand and support her choice to transfer to another school.”

Kynard played in 21 games for the Buckeyes this past season and averaged 3.5 points and 1.2 rebounds. She missed 14 games because of injury and illness. She played in 74 games over three seasons, averaging 2.3 points. She had four starts.

Xavier went 8-23 last season, ending with 13 straight losses. Before the season, coach Amy Waugh resigned and was replaced on an interim basis by Brian Neal on Oct. 9. Neal was named permanent coach on Nov. 7.

“With a young roster, adding a veteran like Maleeka, who has played three years in the Big Ten, will help stabilize us on the court and in the locker room,” Neal said in a statement. “She’s a versatile playmaker on offense and on the other end, she’s a pressure defender who will raise our level dramatically.”

OSU returns guards Ameryst Alston, Cait Craft and Raven Ferguson for next season. They also will have freshman guards Kelsey Mitchell, Chelsea Mitchell and Asia Doss and will add freshman transfer Kianna Holland in December.
