Clippers 8, Chiefs 3: Moncrief, bullpen provide lift

High Contrast Normal Version

Carlos Moncrief went 3 for 3 with a solo home run and three runs scored, and the visiting Clippers’ bullpen pitched 41/3 shutout innings in an 8-3 victory over the Syracuse Chiefs yesterday at Alliance Bank Stadium.

Giovanny Urshela scored on a throwing error to give the Clippers a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Columbus tacked on three more runs in the second on RBI singles by Elliot Johnson and Urshela and another throwing error. The Chiefs got three back in the bottom of the second off Columbus starter Duke von Schamann.

Von Schamann was relieved by Austin Adams (2-1) with two runners on and two outs in the fifth and a 7-3 lead. Adams got Brock Peterson to line out to end the inning, and he allowed three hits with two strikeouts and no walks in 11/3 innings to earn the victory. Vinnie Pestano allowed two hits in two innings, and Mike Zagurski closed it out with a 1-2-3 ninth.
