Defenseman Tim Erixon signed a one-year contract with the Blue Jackets that should keep him in the NHL this season.

Erixon’s contract, worth $600,000, is a one-way deal, meaning the Blue Jackets would have to pay him that amount even if he were demoted to the minor-league affiliate in Springfield, Mass.

Erixon, 23, had five goals, 33 assists and 16 penalty minutes for Springfield last season. He was recalled to Columbus five times but played in only two games.

Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said repeatedly last season that he thought Erixon was an NHL-level defenseman stuck in the American Hockey League because of the Blue Jackets’ depth on defense. That’s one reason veteran Nikita Nikitin wasn’t re-signed. His rights were traded to Edmonton last month for a fifth-round pick.

Erixon will compete with Dalton Prout and David Savard for a spot on the third pair. Fedor Tyutin and Jack Johnson are established as the top pair, and James Wisniewski and Ryan Murray as the second pair. Other defensemen competing for a roster spot will be Cody Goloubef, Will Weber and Frederic St. Denis, but they have two-way contracts.

Erixon has played in 51 NHL games with the New York Rangers and Blue Jackets, totaling no goals, seven assists and a plus-4 rating. He was acquired on July 23, 2012, from the Rangers in the deal that sent Rick Nash to New York for centers Brandon Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov, Erixon and a first-round draft pick, used last summer on Kerby Rychel.

The Blue Jackets’ remaining free agents are forwards Ryan Johansen, Jerry D’Amigo and Dana Tyrell.

Record donation

The Blue Jackets Foundation yesterday announced a record-high $800,000 donation to local charities and youth hockey organizations. The foundation has invested in three main causes: fighting pediatric cancer, keeping kids healthy and safe, and helping to grow and support youth hockey. Since 2000, the foundation has donated $6.2 million to various programs.
