Trevor Thompson, who transferred to the Ohio State men’s basketball program from Virginia Tech in April, will not accompany the Buckeyes on their five-day trip to the Bahamas this week.
The team leaves Tuesday and plays games against Bahamian teams on Thursday and Friday nights in Nassau.
Dan Wallenberg, associate athletic director for communications, confirmed to The Dispatch that Thompson will not make the trip. But Wallenberg did not confirm the veracity of a tweet by Thompson on Saturday night in which the 6-foot-11 sophomore said he would not play this season, ostensibly because the NCAA denied his hardship waiver seeking immediate eligibility.
Wallenberg said Thompson’s status for the season could be clarified as soon as today.
Thompson sought the waiver on the grounds that he transferred to be closer to his Indianapolis home. An expert on NCAA rules told The Dispatch in April that the waiver was unlikely to be granted.
