Braxton Miller will miss the 2014 Ohio State football season, the school confirmed late this afternoon, about 23 hours after the senior quarterback suffered another injury to the shoulder of his right throwing arm. The injury will require a second surgery in the past six months on the shoulder.

“I love Ohio State and Buckeye nation, and my goal is to come  back from this injury stronger and better than ever,” Miller said in a news release from the school. “I am on course to graduate in December and I want to attend graduate school, and then return to lead the Buckeyes next season.

“In the meantime, I want to give all the support I can to my coaches and teammates as they chase a championship this season.”

Miller, who was headed into his fourth year as a starter, suffered the original injury during the Orange Bowl loss to Clemson on Jan.3. The joint was given time to heal on its own, but it was determined later that surgery was needed, and it was performed on Feb.20.

The reigning two-time winner of the Chicago Tribune Silver Football award, which goes annually to the Big Ten MVP, Miller had been restricted in his activity, and especially his passing, in preseason camp the past two weeks.

“My thoughts and prayers are with Braxton and his family,” coach Urban Meyer said in the news release. “This is an unfortunate injury to a young man who means so much to this program and to Buckeye nation.”

Sources said yesterday afternoon was expected to his first extensive practice session, but that he suffered the injury while throwing a routine pass. There was no contact involved by the defense. It’s thought he suffered a dislocation of the shoulder, though, again, OSU did not confirm that.
