49ers expect head coach Kyle Shanahan back for Australian opener following car crash

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan remains on track to lead the team from the sideline when it opens the 2026 regular season against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, despite continuing to recover from injuries suffered in a July 14 car accident. General manager John Lynch said the organization is not expecting Shanahan to miss the Sept. 10 international matchup, adding that doctors remain encouraged by his progress as training camp begins.

Shanahan sustained a concussion, three broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken hand and facial injuries that required more than 40 stitches in the collision near his Northern California home. Although the injuries were described as non-life-threatening, Lynch said the concussion remains the primary factor in determining when Shanahan can fully resume coaching responsibilities. The coach is being evaluated through a process similar to the NFL’s concussion protocol for players before receiving full medical clearance.

While Shanahan recovers, assistant head coach Chris Foerster will oversee day-to-day head coaching duties during training camp with support from coordinators Raheem Morris, Klay Kubiak and Brant Boyer. Lynch emphasized that the arrangement is intended to maintain continuity rather than alter the team’s preparation, noting that Shanahan has remained involved with the club in a limited capacity and will gradually increase his workload as his recovery allows.

The 49ers have stressed that Shanahan’s health will take priority over any timetable, but the organization remains optimistic he will be ready for the NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia. The highly anticipated opener in Melbourne is expected to be a landmark event for the league, and Lynch reiterated that the club will rely on medical guidance rather than a fixed schedule before clearing its longtime head coach to return to full duties.
