NY Giants name rookie Jaxson Dart backup QB over Jameis Winston ahead of Week 1

The New York Giants have named rookie Jaxson Dart as their backup QB over seasoned veteran Jameis Winston, as the team heads into Week 1.

Back in April, Giants coach Brian Daboll named Russell Wilson as New York’s starting quarterback for the 2025 season. The Giants have since released their unofficial depth chart in advance of Sunday’s 2025 regular season opener against the Washington Commanders, and Dart is listed as No. 2 behind Wilson and ahead Winston.

Dart had a very impressive preseason showing — in three preseason games, Dart, 22, finished 32-of-47 (68.1%) for 372 yards, three touchdown passes and one touchdown run.

The Giants season-opener against the Washington Commanders in Landover, Md., will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
